Directions and Planes Checked on a Body
Body Plan, Homeostasis and the Two-Semester Map · page 8
| Statement | Why it is true |
|---|---|
| The wrist is distal to the elbow | farther from the limb's origin |
| The knee is proximal to the ankle | nearer the limb's origin |
| The nose is medial to the eyes | nearer the midline |
| The sternum is anterior to the heart | in front of it |
| The skin is superficial to muscle | nearer the body surface |
Midsagittal is a single plane, exactly on the midline. Parasagittal planes are many: any sagittal plane off the midline.
A coronal MRI slice lies in the frontal plane. A sagittal slice shows the body in profile.
